Czech Republic, 1965 Jan Sverak is a graduate from the Prague Cinema Academy and Empties is the last part of his film trilogy. The first film The Elementary School is a story about childhood, the second – Kolya – deals with the life of a middle-aged person, but Empties is a film about old age. Sverak has been awarded many times, including a nomination for the Best Foreign Film Oscar for The Elementary School, as well as the Media Award at the Venice IFF for Accumulator 1 and the main award at Karlovy Vary for The Ride.
