A Lead-in

Augusts mysteriously vanishes; Elvita simply turns up one day, but The Ship Sails On. It is after all what matters. The film crowd creates films and inhabits them, the festivals screen. Everyone is essential to everyone else there, and all together they are most wanted – in the eye of the beholder. The last ship I have been aboard was steaming up the rivers of the wide-opened Russia, filming the documentary Just a priest. It was a confused, sinful, but quite a human vehicle – a floating church.

By way of leave-taking

I have been talkative enough all this time. It is, soon, forty years – my age in cinematography. In 1986, I assembled my last film The Voice calling it my day in filmmaking. And today is the day I bid my farewell to Arsenals. It is now all yours. I have been frequently asked what is Arsenals , what are the principles, the criteria of our film selection? I can only be very brief as regards the forum itself – if we observe an ocean cruiser and we follow its sea-faring, witness it changing, coming the time, the captain, the wheelman, the boatswain, and, if we are among the passengers of that liner, the

A.Plaudis. Hello and good bye! 1927 – 2008.

plaudis2.jpg The heart of Latvian scriptwriter, generator of ideas Arnolds Plaudis stopped during the only activity he held above the cinema, theater and fashion- swimming. It wouldn’t be right to say that people who remain behind would mourn because nobody ever has seen Arnold being sad and it seems he is not sad even now.

Antonioni in Riga. Leaving.

antonioni2a.jpg In 1991 a huge fire devastated the pride of the city of Jurmala – Jūras pērle (the Sea pearl) that had its ship-like front reaching far into the beach and approaching the sea. Unnecessary to mention that the last celebration taking place in this restaurant was a dedication to the opening of Michelangelo Antonioni’s exhibition Architecture in vision. 32 screen images „Hands in Antonioni’s films” and „The threshold in Antonioni’s films”, which were made of 32 slide show projectors, brought back the memories of the hidden magic of his films. Journalists incredulously read the telegram that had come from Rome:

Documents of time like good wine... Memories are our only paradise. The best memories come from our childhood - the imperceptible bright age, when everything seems beautiful. The sentiment of losseliani as well as of cinema come from a time that will never return. His films are documents of time. Otar Iosseliani has lived in France for 25 years but still remains a true Georgian. He is an exile of his own conviction. He

Jānis Streičs – 70!

If I walked out on the street to approach a random passer by asking to quickly name one Latvian film director, I bet this person would say - Janis Streičs! If he weren't a film director, he'd be a carpenter, Streičs himself has admitted. He'd be making tables, chairs and beds, bookshelves, visitors' benches and hope chests for young maidens. He'd become dizzy with the smell of wood. However, the smell of dust in a film studio or that of the green in a country farm is just as intoxicating and several other things are ready to
