Yevgeny Yufit

Russia, 1961

Yevgeny Yufit graduated from the Higher Technical College at the Leningrad Metalworks as a mechanical engineer in 1983. He has exhibited his paintings and photographs in the former USSR and abroad. Founder of the experimental necrorealism film movement. In the early 80s Yufit took up performances and exhibitions, but in 1985 he set up one of the first independent film studios in the Soviet Union — Mzhalala film. In 1988-1989 he attended a film workshop led by Alexander Sokurov. He was an assistant director with Sokurov on the film Save and Protect in 1989.He gets his recognition with short movies stylistically resembling the cinematography of the 1920s and 30s. Genetic experiments and pseudoscience are  Yufit’s favourite themes.  Preserving his poetic and grotesque manner, he focused on full-length films in the 90s.
